Top To Tail 1940’s
The phrase The War to End all Wars, made its tragic return and the six years of conflict cast a giant shadow over fashion, with austerity being the watch word, and it was not until 1949 in the UK for example, that saw the end of rationing of clothing. This was not the decade to be flamboyant, but to every rule there is always an exception that is there to prove it, and this naughty bit of non-conformity that was the polar opposite from the norm was the Zoot Suit. But perhaps the highlight of the decade was the invention and use of Nylon. Though Rayon had been around since the 20’s it was Nylon that ushered in the age of Man-Made-Fabrics, that still to this day influences so much on what we wear.
